A Drop-in unit is a type of pre-built package system that is completely pre wired and pre configured , the installer simply cuts a large hole in the coolroom roof and the drop in unit covers the hole - there is 3 parts to a drop in unit - at the bottom there is the  evaporator this is the cold part and  is inside the coolroom space , in the middle there is a large piece of styrene insulation that blocks up the hole this insulation is called the "plug" because it plugs up the hole and on top of the plug is the condensing unit which is ofter called the engine.

A Drop in Unit is a "Cheap + Easy" Refrigeration solution , we usually see Drop-In , or  package refrigeration units in cheep coolrooms and cheep shop fit-outs, most of the time the person who has bought and paid for the package type unit has not owned one before and has not had to service and maintain this type of equipment before.

It is not fair to simply explain the problems with out outling the good points, so here is my attempt at a ballanced assessment of the drop in package system

Good

  • Very quick
  • Refrigeration Knowledge not required
  • Can be Cheeper

Bad

  • Inefficient System design
  • one size fits all approach
  • difficult to repair
  • can not be upgraded
  • Not TX Valve
  • Short effective working Life
  • Uses More Electricity

Okay so what are we suggesting , well if you are looking to purchase a NEW coolroom, then be aware of the short comings seriously look at a remote unit and get a qualified refrigeration company to take at look at the plans and quote the requirements. if you already own a drop in and it is working . our advice is to look after it , dont stack boxes and rubbish around it or on to of it , clean the unit regularly (once a month) especially clean the condensor coil and you unit will last longer. If you have a drop in unit that is old and needs replacing we suggest that you throw it away and upgrade to engeneered "proper" refrigeration solution.
